Blue Penguin (Korora)

There is always the opportunity to have chance encounters with the amazing Korora on a tour with Seal Kayak Kaikoura. Being the smallest penguin in the world be prepared to be entertained by their delicate and playful energy out on the water. NZ is known as the “penguin capital of the world” and in Kaikoura other species of birds.

  • Korora spend the majority of the daylight hours out at sea and come ashore at dark to nest.
  • Excellent swimmers covering up to 70km in a day and feeding in depths up to 50m.
  • Breed in isolated pairs in small colonies with their burrows being close to the seashore.
  • Fully grown adults sit at approximately 1kg and stand only 35cm tall.
  • Spend 2 weeks between Jan and March continuously on land in order to replace all their feathers (moulting).
  • Produce 1-2 eggs anytime between July and November
  • Parents take turns to incubate the eggs whilst the other feeds at sea
